The Renaissance: Background to Shakespeare’s World

Our Learning Goal: understand and explain some key facts about the background to Shakespeare’s world, the Renaissance, and some important Renaissance artists.

This week we have been studying some background to Shakespeare’s world.

  1. What does Renaissance mean, when was it, and what happened during this period?

The Renaissance was the rebirth, the discovery of new and interesting things, they made many breakthroughs in this time and rewrote the world as we know it.

  1. Who were the two rulers of England during Shakespeare’s time?

The two Rulers where Queen Elizabeth the I also known as Good Queen Bess or The Virgin Queen and the second ruler was James I also known as Jame VI in Scotland

  1. In which city and country did the Renaissance originallybegin?  Though many think it began in England, It originally began in Italy.

    1. We learned a bit about four famous artists of the Renaissance: Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rafaele, and Donatello. Here is my slideshow about them, which is called

    ‘Not the Ninja Turtles’:

    1. One interesting thing I found out about the Renaissance was home much they believed in the hierarchy of God, They believed god was above everyone and everything was dictated by God, which is wild to think about now with all the religions in the world!

The Elizabethan world view

Our Learning goal : To understand and explain some key facts about the background of shakespeare’s world

Today we learned about how people saw the world in Shakespeare’s time. They thought that the Christian God was above and controlled everything in their life and world.

The hierarchy goes

God

Angels (Seraphims and Cherubims at the top)

Demons

Man (Kings at the highest, Woman are much lower)

Animals (Lions as the king, Whales for fish, Eagles for birds)

Plants and Metal (Gold is the top)

They also thought God controlled everything and that if you went against God or Kings you would disturb the world and go against that natural order of God’s world.  For example if a woman went off and married a man that her father didn’t approve of she would be going against God’s natural order and the fate of her life.

They had four humors:

Yellow bile – causes anger

Black bile – causes depression and sadness

Blood – causes excitement and lust

Phlegm – causes lethargy and boredom

While characters have free will in the stories if they have to much of a certain humor they believed it would control how they acted and what they did in the book eg. if you had too much blood it would make the character act impulsively.

For example in Romeo and Juliet, when Romeo thought Juliet had died he committed suicide without even thinking twice about what he was doing.

In conclusion in the Elizabethan times they believed everything was controlled by God and humors, which is very different to what we believe now.

Reflection on the Holocaust memoir Night by Elie Wiesel

We read Elie Wiesel’s memoir/autobiography Night, about his experiences as a boy during the Holocaust.

As a 12-year-old boy before the war, what sort of person was Elie and what was his life like?

Elie was a smart, kind, curious kid that wanted to know lots about Jewish culture (his culture) and learn more about kabbalah

How had Elie changed from the 12-year-old boy in Sighet to the 16-year-old liberated from the concentration camp at the end of the war?

He changed from a bright happy kid to a tired, exhausted , famished , decaying corpse of a teenager that has no tears left to shed

As you read and/or listened to Elie’s account of what he experienced during the Holocaust, how did it make you feel?

It made me feel empathy for his circumstance and furious at the people that made him endure the pain , trauma and hurt he did

What part(s) of Elie’s story did you find most upsetting or hardest to cope with? Why do you think that was?

When his father became very sick and he was eventually taken to the cremation building or when Juliek got trampled to death after he played the song on the violin

Did any part of Elie’s story give you hope or make you feel a bit better? Why?

When the resistance started standing up and helping the people in the camp and when the Americans infiltrated and the war ended

Has Elie’s story changed or made clearer your views about human beings, human rights, and how we relate to each other in society? How?

Yes, it has I have been thinking more about how it was back then and how they’ve been treated in the past also about how cruel the people in the world can really be

What is the most important message or idea you have taken from reading Night?

That if you keep persevering even in the worst possible circumstance you could EVER be in, it will get better, eventually, it will take time but it will get better.

Schindler’s list

We are learning about the historical background to the Holocaust memoir Night, by Elie Wiesel.

We watched the 1993 movie Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg.

  1.  The hardest part to watch for me was when the maid got abused because it sparked a lot of shock and anger into me and I thought she died.

  1. When the oskar hugged his secretary because it was a heartwarming scene even though oskar was crying about the fact he could’ve got more Jews and helped them. even though he was going broke.

  1. My question is why did amon goeth abuse his maid like that he at first was being creepy but kinda nice and stuff then he just abused her AND I want to know how they knew they were Jewish how would they know if they just didn’t lie

  1. Research into the questions and look for articles or statements people have made.

I use some digital tools for learning, but I don’t know how they help me learn. I occasionally use digital tools to help my learning.

I’m starting to use them to understand how other people might feel.

I regularly use digital tools to support my learning.

I understand how these tools help me understand the way other people feel and experience the world
I know and can explain how digital tools help me learn.

I can see how they help me become caring and kind to others.

I easily use technology throughout my learning.

I use digital tools to support and encourage others in their learning.

I don’t really understand how other people feel when I talk to them or hear about things happening in the world. I am starting to imagine how others feel.

I can sometimes understand what their experiences might be like.

I’m getting better at imagining how others feel, even if I haven’t experienced it myself.

I want to be brave and do the right thing in class and outside of it.

I want to be more caring and honest to become a better person.

I often think about how I can be more understanding and kind to others.

I try to be brave and do the right thing.

I act in a caring way even when it’s hard or no one notices.

I often show kindness, understanding, and honesty, even when no one sees or it’s not easy.

Being sincere, fair, honest, and brave are important to me, and this is how I want other people to think of me.

I usually give up when things get tough.

I skip parts of my work if it looks too hard or I don’t know what to do.

I give up  or react badly when I get negative feedback.

I’m starting to keep going when things are hard, but I need encouragement.

If I get stuck, I ask for help from my peers or my teacher.

I am beginning to understand that challenges help me grow as a learner.

I’m learning to not give up even when tasks are difficult.

I can solve some problems on my own.

I can handle small or medium challenges by thinking about them.

I never give up, even on the hardest tasks.

When I face big challenges, I think about what happened, adjust, and find solutions.

I understand why perseverance and resilience are important.

I work through any challenge I face and help others do the same.

I make sure I seek out feedback to help my learning.

I know that being resilient is essential in  life.
