Our Learning Goal: understand and explain some key facts about the background to Shakespeare’s world, the Renaissance, and some important Renaissance artists.

This week we have been studying some background to Shakespeare’s world.

  1. What does Renaissance mean, when was it, and what happened during this period?

The Renaissance was the rebirth, the discovery of new and interesting things, they made many breakthroughs in this time and rewrote the world as we know it.

  1. Who were the two rulers of England during Shakespeare’s time?

The two Rulers where Queen Elizabeth the I also known as Good Queen Bess or The Virgin Queen and the second ruler was James I also known as Jame VI in Scotland

  1. In which city and country did the Renaissance originallybegin?  Though many think it began in England, It originally began in Italy.

    1. We learned a bit about four famous artists of the Renaissance: Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rafaele, and Donatello. Here is my slideshow about them, which is called

    1. One interesting thing I found out about the Renaissance was home much they believed in the hierarchy of God, They believed god was above everyone and everything was dictated by God, which is wild to think about now with all the religions in the world!

The Elizabethan world view

Our Learning goal : To understand and explain some key facts about the background of shakespeare’s world

Today we learned about how people saw the world in Shakespeare’s time. They thought that the Christian God was above and controlled everything in their life and world.

The hierarchy goes

God

Angels (Seraphims and Cherubims at the top)

Demons

Man (Kings at the highest, Woman are much lower)

Animals (Lions as the king, Whales for fish, Eagles for birds)

Plants and Metal (Gold is the top)

They also thought God controlled everything and that if you went against God or Kings you would disturb the world and go against that natural order of God’s world.  For example if a woman went off and married a man that her father didn’t approve of she would be going against God’s natural order and the fate of her life.

They had four humors:

Yellow bile – causes anger

Black bile – causes depression and sadness

Blood – causes excitement and lust

Phlegm – causes lethargy and boredom

While characters have free will in the stories if they have to much of a certain humor they believed it would control how they acted and what they did in the book eg. if you had too much blood it would make the character act impulsively.

For example in Romeo and Juliet, when Romeo thought Juliet had died he committed suicide without even thinking twice about what he was doing.

In conclusion in the Elizabethan times they believed everything was controlled by God and humors, which is very different to what we believe now.
